When the tenant moved out at the beginning of last winter, the owners decided not to rent it again but to list the home in the spring with a realtor. They had the home professionally winterized to prevent pipes from freezing. Unknown to them, squatters broke into the home, turned the water back on and were living there until neighbors discovered and reported them.
As a result of the water being turned on by the squatters, the winterization failed and a water line in the attic burst. The broken pipe wasn't discovered until water service was restored this summer.
