Not so! Your first call should be to an industry expert who can help you do something about the damage immediately (like Dragon Restoration, with more than 36 years of experience in drying water-damaged homes and businesses). The amount of time you will spend on hold and describing what you think has happened should be spent seeking immediate professional help and limiting the damage to your personal possessions. Besides, at this point do you really know the cause and extent of the damage? It is better to gather your thoughts and valuable information BEFORE calling your insurance company.
Myth: I understand my coverage!
Probably not! Saying the wrong thing or describing things using the wrong terms can have a huge negative impact on your insurance coverage. It’s important to look at your policy and see what it specifically states. Are you covered for mold? Does it make any difference that the mold is a result of your water damage? Are there any monetary limits on certain types of damages? It pays to talk to someone who has seen thousands of losses, not just one or two. (At Dragon Restoration, we see thousands of losses every year, we help homeowners deal with their insurance companies, and we’ve been in business since 1999)
Myth: My policy covers me for a flood!
No way! Not unless you have a separate insurance policy that is specifically for floods such as one issued by The National Flood Insurance Program. A flood is not covered under any normal insurance policy. Don’t ever call your water damage a “flood” or say my home has been “flooded”. ( Unless it really was caused by an ocean, a river, a lake, etc.)
Myth: I have to use the restoration company my adjuster recommends!
Absolutely Not! You can use whichever restoration company you choose! As a matter of fact, it is illegal for your insurance company to even suggest that you must use the company they recommend. Who do you want to hire, someone who considers your interests first or the insurance company’s?
Myth: I can rent the equipment and do it myself!
Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you should. What is the best way to set up the equipment? What is the best equipment to use in you specific case? Is it safe to dry things that are damaged by different categories of water? Are you renting the best equipment, or leftovers that are old and outdated?
