There are two primary methods of choosing a restoration contractor. The first is to seek a company in the aftermath of a disaster. This method is used most often because most people are not aware that such companies exist. Therefore, they give it no forethought. The problem with this method is that hours count and delays can have a greater effect on the total amount of damage being done. As the property owner, you are ultimately responsible for choosing a restoration contractor to do the work. If no research has gone into identifying a reputable and competent company ahead of time, you may be forced to rely on the advice of the insurance company’s claims representative. This is NOT a good position to be caught in. In this case you must ask yourself, “Is the restoration company more interested in pleasing me, the homeowner, or the insurance company from whom they hope to get more work.
The second method is “pre-selection.” You need to proactively seek out a restoration company that you have contacted ahead of time and developed a relationship with. The development of this relationship should be part of any emergency plan that you design.
