Make sure the pump is plugged in and that the circuit is on.
Inspect the pump’s power cord to insure that it is in good shape.
Clear any debris that may have fallen into the sump crock.
Dump a large bucket of water into the crock and make sure the pump functions properly.
If you have a battery backup, check to see that the battery is fully charged.
Most homeowner’s policies do not provide coverage for sump pump failures. A separate policy, or rider, must be purchased from your insurance agent. The same rider covers drain and sewer backups, so even if you do not have a sump pump, you should purchase this rider. The cost of these riders is usually less that $125-$150 per year with a minimum coverage amount of $5000.00. Larger coverage amounts are usually available for just a few dollars more.
