1. Ensure that your gutters are clear and well maintained to allow for proper water flow off of your roof.
2. Downspouts should divert water 4-6 feet away from the house. If not, this condition can cause excessively high moisture levels in soil at the foundation. Excessive moisture levels in soil near the foundation can affect the ability of the soil to support the weight of the structure.
3. Grading around property should have a minimum 5-degree slope on all sides. Aim for a 3 inch drop every 6 feet to prevent water entry. Grading should also be 6 to 8 inches below brickwork or vinyl siding.
4. Sump pumps should be tested on an annual basis to ensure that they are in working order. Sump pumps are used to remove water from around the foundation of the home.
